SUPERNOVA 2005cs IN M51
SuperNova
This image shows the new supernova in M51 the Whirlpool Galaxy.
PROMINENT SUPERNOVA IN POPULAR GALAXY
This Type II supernova was spotted on June 27, 2005 by Wolfgang Kloehr in Germany.  It was around 13.5V at the time of discovery.  When we imaged it (above) on August 21, it had faded to 14.5V.  Its bright presence changes the well-known face of this often photographed target. The Type II supernova is thought to have been caused by the demise of a red supergiant of some 7 to 12 solar masses.
